5 Ways To Speed Up Laptop Performance

It can be frustrating to see your computer taking long pauses as it strains to startup, open applications or browse the web. This article shows 5 ways to speed up laptop performance quickly and easily.

The brute force approach is always going to be upgrading the RAM memory on your computer. Laptops are just as easy to swap memory modules as desktop PCs are (check your manufacturer guide for exact instructions). One alternative to consider is using a ReadyBoost flash drive that can be simply be plugged into a USB port. The drive can be configured to allocate a portion of its flash memory for use by Windows just like regular RAM.

Next, reduce the strain on your hard drive. This can be done by running your Windows Disk Defragmenter tool to improve data access times. Next, clean out unused applications and temporary files from the drive. Ideally try to keep 10% of the hard drive empty for use by the operating system’s paging file.

Improve the overall health of your laptop by updating your applications (i.e. using Windows update service) and scanning for viruses. By doing these regular PC maintenance tasks you are ensuring you always have the latest code on your computer which often includes performance fixes, and the anti-virus checks safeguard your applications from corruption.

To speed up laptop boot times you can disable some of the services that get executed as the computer starts. This can be done using the System Configuration tool (startup tab). This Microsoft tool can be started through the Start menu, Run program and typing in ‘msconfig’.

Finally, to speed up laptop performance while browsing the web then try disabling add-ons in your browser (which can use a lot of your bandwidth), use your firewall’s permission settings to block some of your applications from accessing the web and don’t be afraid to try using different web browsers as each perform differently depending on the website (e.g. flash based sites can severely slow down some browsers).
