This article goes over some of the more common software issues that cause freezes, along with some solutions.
If your laptop freezes repeatedly when using a certain program then focus your analysis here to begin with. Open the Resmon or Task Manager utility to view the memory usage and CPU usage by the application as it is running. If this is running high, then there may be a code bug or some program file corruption that is leading to the issue.
Start your repairs by scanning the drive for viruses or malware which could have corrupted program files or the registry. Next, check for program updates or patches. Search online for details of known performance issues or customer support tickets reporting the same issue. If others have seen the fault then a fix or work-around may already have been found. Registry and DLL corruption/faults can be harder to fix so are best repair using registry cleaners or a computer software repair that can update program files.
If the laptop freeze occurs randomly then target broader repair approaches. Run Windows update and anti-virus scans. Check you have 10% disk kept free for virtual memory. Run a disk defragmentation tool to optimize how data is ordered on the hard drive and run a disk error check for bad sectors. Check the Device Manager utility for any hardware conflicts and use this tools troubleshooting tips to remedy any found conflicts.
If the above checks fail to stop laptop freezes for you then consult a PC technician with regard to the possibility of this being a component issue (e.g. bad disk sectors, CPU overheating, RAM failure, etc.).
